Employee Spotlight: Aaron Straker
The Zeeto Spotlight series features two new employees every month and provides a glimpse into our lives outside the office
“People who know exactly what they want out of life and work relentlessly until they have whatever that is.” – Aaron Straker on what inspires him.
Name: Aaron Straker
Position: Senior Software Engineer
Time at Zeeto: 1+ years
Tell us three things most people don’t know about you.
- In 4th grade I was hit by a car, then 10 days later spent two weeks in the hospital with meningitis (apparently the two incidents were unrelated).
- I do not like talking to people I don’t know. Awkward small-talk gives me anxiety and I avoid it as much as possible.
- I’m Irish on both sides of my family, have an Irish middle name, and sometimes I grow red hair in my beard.
What are you passionate about?
Being an individual, and doing things my own way.
When I am not at work you can find me…
Most likely at the gym. During the warmer months, out on hiking and backpacking trips. During the colder months, camping out in the desert or snowboarding. On the occasional Saturday night, Shore Club.
What is an ability you wish you had?
Teleportation. Hands down the best ability/superpower, I’ve had this conversation many times. Imagine maximizing the hours in the day by completely removing any time spent commuting or traveling.
What is the most important thing you have learned during your time at Zeeto?
How to be resourceful. Things move fast here, and it’s not likely you have the answer to the problems that present themselves. Being able to think on your feet and quickly find solutions will get you a long way.
Describe what you were like at age 10.
I ate cereal as much as my parents would let me. Shouts to Captain Crunch. Elementary school was a necessary evil. Summer consisted of riding bikes with my friends. Nintendo 64 was God, and I could pray all day long. My role models were D-Generation-X and if you had a problem with that I had two words for you.
What have you always wanted to try but have never done?
I always wanted to work in a pizza shop at some point in my life, making pizzas from scratch. I feel like I’ve kinda missed my chance but I guess I could pick up a part time job for fun, slingin’ za on the weekends.
How do you define success?
Having the freedom to spend your time doing what you want to be doing. I’ll consider myself successful when I’m able to get up and do what I want to do, not what I have to do.
Do you have a hobby that you’re passionate about? What is it?
The weight room. I’ve spent 5 days a week inside a gym for the last 14 years. Through the years I’ve competed in Powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, and CrossFit. I could talk about lifting all day long.
If you could star in a movie, what would be your first choice?
Star Wars. I would be Darth Straker, the most sinister Sith Lord in the entire Galaxy.
If you were an animal what would it be?
A Wolf. I love wolves, I have like 9 wolf t-shirts, and a wolf tattoo.
