Zeeto Spotlight: Alejandro Barrientos
The Zeeto Spotlight series features two new employees every month and provides a glimpse into our lives outside the office
“Seeing how a small idea can turn into something that is used by millions upon millions of people pushes me to keep on learning, innovating and getting better at what I do.” – Alejandro Barrientos on what inspires him.
Name: Alejandro Barrientos
Position: Technical Lead
Time at Zeeto: Less than a year
Tell us three things most people don’t know about you.
- I’m 100% Guatemalan…that small little country south of Mexico.
- I don’t have a middle name…it’s long enough as it is.
- I have a home phone. Living in a canyon has its ups and downs…cell coverage is a down.
What has been the most important innovation you have witnessed in your lifetime?
GPS on your phone. Remember the Thomas Guide series? Have you ever seen one of those maps and tried to figure out what streets to take to get from point A to point B without going on a toll road and without hitting traffic? Yeah, no. Google Maps.
If you were to write a self-help book, what would the topic be?
“How to maximize your time by buying everything on Amazon”…I don’t know how many extra hours of Netflix binging I’ve gained because of Amazon’s 2-day shipping.
What are you most passionate about?
Learning. If somebody says something I’ve never heard of before, the NSA will definitely find it in my Google search history. I’m lucky to have grown up in the internet era because searching through Encyclopedias isn’t quite the same as a quick Google search.
When I am not at work you can find me…
With my dog, Rango. Whether it’s jogging at Mission Bay, walking through the canyon in the backyard or anywhere in the house – he makes sure he’s right there ready to cause trouble.
What did you want to be when growing up?
My elementary school taught us how to program using LOGO which was basically a cursor that let you draw lines on the screen. Since then I just wanted to create programs
What have you always wanted to try but have never done?
I’ve lived in Southern California my whole life and have had many summers where I thought, “I should finally try that surfing thing”, but I always remember…sharks.
What is an ability you wish you had?
I wish I could be one of those speed readers that simply flips through a book in seconds then can regurgitate the whole thing. I read so ridiculously slowly.
If you could be anyone from any time period who would it be and why?
Leonardo da Vinci because he was a great artist, philosopher, scientist, and engineer. He basically did whatever he felt like and did it in an innovative way.
What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?
I would buy a financial advisor to make sure that money lasts me forever. I’ve seen those reality shows “I won the lotto and now I’m broke”. If it’s a small enough amount to never last – an M3, definitely an M3.
Do you have a hobby that you’re passionate about? What is it?
My hobby is trying out new hobbies. It’s led me to try lots of things like learning the guitar, attempting the piano, learning French, candle making, bread making (with a machine…no way can I make it from scratch) and my newest one is making different meals with my Instant Pot.
